Paranormal Romances You HAVE to Read!

Paranormal Romances You HAVE to Read!

October 9, 2019 1 By William Hollis

(upbeat music) – Hi guys, it’s Ashley
from Ash Heart Books. I’m here today to talk
about paranormal romance. I feel like paranormal romance is kind of like the first genre of romance that really got me into reading it. So, it holds a special place in my heart. I have a few recommendations today, that I hope you guys will enjoy as well. The first one I wanna
recommend is called, The Raven and it’s by Sylvain Reynard. He has another series that’s contemporary but this is his paranormal series. And, basically this takes place in Italy, which was very cool and it
has to do with vampires. Our main character Raven
is an art restorationist, I guess, she restores art at a museum. All of his books always
have a lot to do with art and culture, which if you enjoy that, it definitely is a bonus for his books. But this one, has kind of
like a mysterious setting, I don’t know, I got kind
of a little creeped out, to be honest. But, basically Raven was in
an accident when she was a kid and has a bit of a limp from it. And so, it’s always kind of bothered her but she’s kind of got on with her life. One day she’s kind of
attacked by these men and she’s saved by this
mysterious stranger, who turns out might have more
to him than meets the eye. Basically the story starts from there. This is a really cool setting, I really liked Italy being the setting. The whole art scene was really interesting and I just liked this take on vampires. I thought it was really different, so I definitely recommend this one. The next one I wanna recommend
is The Darkest Night, which is book one in Gena Showalter’s Lords of the Underworld series. I was one of those people
that had not read one until recently and I really enjoyed this. This first book really
set up the series so well and it did a great job
of building the world, as well as kind of touching
on all the side characters that you are really hoping
to get a book in the future. So, in this first book,
basically we find out these men were cursed a long time ago by the gods for doing a terrible crime
and so they were punished by having these, basically
demons put inside them. They’re basically, kind of,
tortured and have to put up with this because of what they did. Now we’re in the present
tense, it takes place in Europe in this really kind
of creepy castle type thing. Our main character, Maddox, basically is tortured every
night and sent to hell because of what he did in the past. Our other main character is Ashlyn and she basically has
grown up in this institute her whole life, working for these men who go around and look
for different people and help different kind of people who have powers and things like that. Basically what she can
do is she can hear voices of people in rooms that they’ve been in. So, she goes into a room or a house, she can hear past
conversations that they’ve had. She cannot get away from these voices, she thinks she’s kinda crazy. And, she goes up to this
castle because the people in town have been talking about these men, some call them angels,
and some call them demons, but she wants their help. Basically, that’s where the story starts and without going into too much detail, I really enjoyed this, the
mythology was really cool. I liked the backstory of
the characters that we got, it really set it up well. There’s definitely a bit of a
soul mate type thing going on with Ashlyn and Maddox, and I thought it fit really well with the story line. If you haven’t picked up
Lords of the Underworld yet, definitely pick it up. I really really enjoyed
it and I cannot wait to read more of the character’s stories. The next one I wanna recommend, it’s called Hunt the Moon
and it’s by Kari Cole. This story revolves around werewolves. Our main character
comes into town to visit her brother’s fiance’s family, and turns out that they
might be part of a wolf pack. She’s grown up knowing about werewolves because she is one, but
the person who raised her basically thought
that they were horrible, they were monsters, and she was told to repress everything from herself. She never turned and nothing like that. She doesn’t wanna be any part of it. She’s a vegetarian, all of that. But, when she gets here and she realizes who he’s marrying into,
she kinda loses it. The story kind of starts from there. Our other main character
is the alpha of the pack. Those two characters have a connection and it basically follows them, her kind of coming to
terms with who she is, and being okay with that,
and knowing that just because she has this
different part of her, it doesn’t make her a monster
or anything like that. There’s also a bit of a
mystery running throughout this because basically different
members of the pack have been being killed over the past year, including our main character’s father. And so, they’re kinda trying
to figure out what’s going on. You get little glimpses, chapters of the person doing the
bad things, bad guy. You’re wondering the whole
time what’s going on, what’s happening. It was a really interesting mix of your typical paranormal romance with a mystery kind of mixed it, and I really enjoyed that. I definitely wanna pick
up more from Kari Cole because she wrote the characters so well, the two main characters,
their relationship, it was a slow go of it and I thought that made sense considering her past and all the kind of baggage
that she had to deal with. She had been through so much, their family and her sister. I just really enjoyed the
fact that it was a slow burn but you knew it was gonna be
so good once you got there. I definitely recommend
Hunt the Moon by Kari Cole. The next couple books I wanna recommend is actually a series and that’s called The Broken Destiny
Series by Jeaniene Frost. This is the first one, which
is called, The Beautiful Ashes. And then, this is book two,
which is, The Sweetest Burn. There’s also a third book, which I will put a picture up
somewhere here for you guys. I really really enjoyed this series. But, basically at the start of the story her sister goes missing and she
goes looking for her sister. While she goes to this B&B
where her sister was last seen, she’s taken by this
man, like taken captive and she’s rescued by our
other main character, Adrian. Basically Adrian has a lot more goin’ on then first meets the eye. I was pulled into this
world of demons and angels where she has to basically
find these mythical objects in order to find her sister. In order to find these objects though, she has to go through different
demon realms to find them. One of our main characters is an angel. So basically Ivy goes on this
journey in the first book and throughout the series of
trying to rescue her sister, but then there’s maybe a
little bit more at stake than just finding her sister. And, you find that out throughout
the rest of the series. I highly recommend this series. The two main characters, Ivy and Adrian, have the best witty dialogue. I’m such a sucker for
witty, funny dialogue. He was definitely your brooding male but he also just had so
much to his backstory that you find out. Again, a bit of a soul mate situation I felt like going on, a bit of a destin, destiny that was
definitely playing into it. And there was a lot of talk about do you follow your destiny? Does your destiny make you do things? Or, do you have your own choices? I really enjoyed that aspect of it. I just thought it was
really interesting to read. And it was so much fun, to be honest. This is exactly the kind
of series I look for. I recommend this series,
The Broken Destiny series by Jeanine Frost, all
three books were fantastic. I want to recommend is,
Phantom Evil by Heather Graham. I loved this book. This is book one in her
Crew of Hunters series. I thought it was absolutely fantastic. The story starts off the series
where the crew is created. Someone named Adam Harrison
creates this crew of hunters for the government that
is going to be taken in any time there’s kind of a question of, is there something
paranormal with this crime. Our main character’s name is Jackson Crow and he’s gonna be the leader of this team. I would say out of the team
he’s definitely the skeptic of the team, but I think
it balances out nicely. He’s gone through a lot in
his past that leads to that. Our other main character’s
name is Angela Hawkins and she basically has some
abilities where she’s able to see some ghosts and things like that. The story takes place in New Orleans, which is the best setting
for a creepy story, and it takes place in this haunted house. In this house of ghosts, and murders, and all this bad stuff in the past. The Senator and his wife bought this house but the Senator’s wife committed suicide, or at least it looks like
she committed suicide. However, the Senator is
convinced that was not suicide, that’s why he wants this
team to come in and find out is there something else
going on, is it paranormal, or was it just suicide? So basically, the team comes in. You have Angela and Jackson,
and then there’s, I think, four other members of the team,
which was just so much fun. This story had a really
good balance of creepy, mystery, and just really
funny, kind of fun characters. They really seem like a
family right off the bat. They’re meeting each other, each person has their own skill that
they bring to the team. I just really enjoyed this, it had ghosts, it had kind of like creepiness. I thought it was a great read for fall. If you want something that’s creepy but not gonna necessarily
keep you up like at night, I definitely recommend the series. I will for sure be reading
more in this series because I loved our characters and I liked the mix of
mystery and paranormal. The next one I wanna suggest to you guys is A Discovery of Witches
by Debora Harkness. This is a whole series, but I’ll mostly talk
about this first book. I just think this is one
of my favorite paranormal kind of romances that I’ve ever read. It definitely has a lot of aspects to it, so it’s about history, it’s
about paranormal stuff, it’s a love story, it’s perfect. This follows Diana Bishop,
who is a professor, and kind of like a scientist,
but she’s also a witch. As the story goes, she also
meets Mathew Claremont, who is a vampire. Basically this story just
has everything you’d want in a paranormal, it has
witches, it has demons, it has vampires, it has mystical objects. I loved this series so, so much. Mathew and Diana’s chemistry together and their relationship was fantastic. Obviously it’s a little
bit of a doom scenario, and a little bit of a forbidden love because she’s a witch and he is a vampire. It’s kind of frowned upon. I just really enjoyed it. I loved the series. If you are a history person, like me, you will absolutely adore this because Debora Harkness really weaves in history through this series so well. Obviously a lot of these
characters are very old so they have huge backstories
that she can kind of fill with history and I thought
it was fantastically done. I highly suggest this series. It has the best of all the things you want in a paranormal romance, so I
definitely suggest this one. The last book I want to
suggest is a new book by Gina Showalter, called Shadow and Ice. This is the new book
in her brand new series that’s going to be coming out. This is such a different kind of book. Basically, this book
is about these warriors from a long, long time
ago that were fighting in this war and they
were very brutal wars. One winner could survive
out of many, many men, so it was very violent, very deadly. Well, in the start of our
story our main character, male character, gets frozen. And basically, they’re frozen in time. And these guys, these warriors, are frozen in this cave
for many, many years. Our main female character,
and her and her sister are on this vacation up into the Arctic and they come across this cave
with these warriors in it. And, she thinks at first
that it’s a fake thing, like it’s something like
wax figures or something. Well, she’s really shocked
when all of a sudden the main character springs out of the ice, that’s where the story starts. It was such an interesting blend of things and I think this is gonna be
a really interesting series, I can definitely tell the
world building is there, you definitely have some
really strong characters. Our female character is really strong, our male character is
definitely very alpha male. If you like Gina Showalter’s other works, I really all of her stuff
that I’ve read so far, definitely check out this series. Alright, so those are all of my paranormal romance recommendations. Let me know what some of your favorite paranormal romances are. It’s coming into the fall season, it’s always a favorite
thing for me to read, so I would absolutely love to know. Thank you guys so much for watching and I’ll see you guys next time. Bye. (upbeat music)
