Spirit of Hungary 2016 április – munkálatok a NY – Vendée verseny előtt
Preparations before the NY – Vendée race in Les Sables d’Olonne. The weather doesn’t always treat us nicely. We had to cut out the two sheaths where the rudder cases go, in order to put them 10 centimetres farther in. We’re done with it, it’s laminated. Now the whole thing has to be sculpted, puttied and painted. This is my job for today. Everything needs to be polished, well-fitted, and thoroughly fixed. Tomorrow we have to paint it. Same thing with the rudder cases, They have to be extended by 10 centimetres at this end and then finish them, paint them. All this have to be done by Monday. Now is Saturday morning. So we have two and a half days to complete all this. If the sky doesn’t fall on us, we can do it. At the moment we are doing an ultrasonic examination of the keel blade. The point of this is that we send the ultrasound into the metal body through a special agent. which allows us to…. Please put the head somewhere here. This allows us to see an echo of the sound on the back surface, you can see it here, and we can also see the thickness of the material. It’s shows around 100 millimetres at the area where my colleague put the instrument. As we follow the echo we can see the thickness of the material decrease. This is our main echo signal. So we can see it’s now only 50 millimetres at that area. And over here we started with 100 mm. This is why, in case we find a problem, we are able to tell exactly where and how deep it is inside the material. Have you found anything yet? No, fortunately nothing so far. It’s perfect. Approximately we have one half or a quarter of a square metre left to see. We can say that this keel is in perfect shape. Examination of the new mast We are checking the other side of the mast now. The previous side was flawless. We didn’t see any deficiencies there. Very much seems like this side will be perfect too. It has a nice surface, easy to examine. We get beautiful echoes from the back.
